A member asked:

Is it possible to be allergic to barley & not be allergic to other grain/oats?

Barley allergy alone: Yes, it's possible. Each food has some unique proteins that can stimulate an allergy, so you can be allergic to that food alone. We have skin tests for the different grains, so you can find out if it's just barley or other allergies as well. For gluten enteropathy, or celiac disease, the antigen stimulating it is common to wheat rye and barley; the reaction isn't allergic but is immunologic.
