What are the consequences of having scoliosis?

Pain: All depend upon the severity and location of the curve.Mild curves are usually asymptomatic other than occasional back pain, however more severe curves can produce a variety of symptoms such as respiratory insufficiency(due to decrease lung capacity)severe back pain due to degerative disc disease, umbalanced curves with postural changes, and if you are female asymetry of the breast etc.

Usually none: For most, there are no consequences after growth has been completed and the curve is under 50 degrees and if it does not involve the lower back.

It depends: In general, curves less than 45 degrees in the thoracic spine are not thought to cause problems. Curves in the lumbar spine can cause premature degenerative changes potentially leading to back and leg pain. Curves over 45 degrees can relentlessly progress and in severe cases can cause multiple potential problems including even cardiac and respiratory failure. Thank you for your question.
