Venous ultrasound: A mildly painful swelling in the back of the knee can be a cyst coming off of the joint (a baker's or popliteal cyst). If you have other risk factors for a blood clot (smoking, history of cancer, family history of blood clots or a tendency to clot), then a venous ultrasound may be the best way to try to differentiate the two. Often a diagnosis of a popliteal cyst is made by location & size.
