Spit ups are common: Small amounts of spit ups are very common in infants, due mostly in part to their anatomy. Since the esophageal sphincter is not as well developed for the first few months, they are at an anatomical disadvantage for keeping milk in the stomach. If not associated with poor weight gain, projectile vomiting or severe distress, spit ups are not cause for concern.
