Why you never put tofflemire with matrix band on anterior teeth?

Homework ?: Access to anterior restorations is usually from the lingual, not the occlusal (incisal for anteriors). The matrix band is best designed to replace the missing wall on premolar and molar interproximal restorations, allowing for occlusal placement of the restorative material. http://nextstepdentalresource.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Training-Manual-Tofflemire-and-Matrix-Band.pdf

No indications: The primary function and indication of the matrix is to restore anatomic contours and contact points in the back teeth for the amalgam restorations.

Matrix: The tofflemire matrix band is for rhe back teeth. Usually a clean matrix band is used on the front teeth

We use clear strips: tofflemire is difficult and awkward to use on anterior teeth. It is also more difficult to expose the composite to bonding light. The clear strips allows a smooth margin and allow bonding light to do its job.

Plastic strip used: To restore an anterior restoration, a plastic strip is normally used with a wedge to minimize gingival excess. A tofflemire band is normally used for posterior restorations.

Closed off: The access to put the filling material in would be closed off when you tighten the band. A Mylar strip is slipped between the teeth and then pulled tight against the tooth after the filling material is placed in the prepared tooth area. The light can pass thru this clear strip , but cannot pass thru the metal band.

This is only a tool: A Tofflemire is merely a tool to guide dental filling material into place and keep it there while it hardens. Most Toffflemire bands are metal and do not allow light to penetrate. Most anterior fillings are done using a clear plastic matrix instead of Tofflemire bands. So, the word never is inappropriate, just not commonly used in our line of work. On occasion I needed to use it in the anterior.

Not: it's not necessary to use to create the fillings in anteroir teeth. usually anterior teeth are filled with resin. Clear matrices are often used.

Clear plastic: The matrix band is there to hold the filling material in when filling the cavity. This is not as difficult in front teeth. For tooth colored fillings, we cannot user metal, so when we do need to hold the material in, we use clear plastic. Light goes through it and it does not scratch or stain the filling material. We use light to harden the filling.

Dental Restoration: requires a mold when contact parts of the teeth are affected. Tofflemire is recommended on premolars and molars to hold the matrix designed to conform to the shape of the posterior teeth.

Access: Tofflemire matrix bands are made of metal. Light cannot pass through the metal band. When anterior teeth are prepared for "kissing lesions", the access is from the front/facial or from the back/lingual. Light must pass through the band to cure the resin filling material. Therefore, dentists use a clear mylar strip.

Good question: These types of matrix bands are used to go around the tooth when you are filling from the top. Many of the anterior teeth are filled from the side or at an angle.

Access...: is hindered since most fillings on anterior teeth are placed from a lateral approach vs. a vertical approach on posterior teeth.

Not Indicated: A Mylar Strip (clear plastic) is the material of choice to support a missing portion of an anterior tooth. The material is flexible, see through and contains the composite in a shape approximating tooth contour. The tofflemire matrix band's function is most effective with posterior Amalgam Restorations.

Contour is wrong: Anterior teeth typically are too slender for a tofflemire matrix system. Typically we use mylar strips with inter proximal wedging to establish contacts and contour in this area.

Not indicated: Toffelmire bands are an opaque metal and we cannot cure the composite resin material through the metal bands. We do use a clear matrix band on anterior teeth and the light can penetrate and harden the composite resin.

Matrix Band: Never say never...Occasionally they can be used on Canines which are anterior teeth. BUT!...The reason is using a clear matrix is so much better for anterior teeth because we can laser cure through the clear plastic and help shape and bond the tooth colored filling to the enamel in the most natural way.

Matrix Technique: In certain cases modifying the band with a scissor can make use of Toffelmire for anterior teeth. Mylar strips are the preferred technique for matrixing an anterior restoration. In certain cases the rigidity of the metallic band(which can be shaped, is useful. Never say "Never"

Access: The Tofflemire matrix band would cover the entire cavity preparation on an anterior tooth. It only works on posteriro teeth.

Inappropriate: While I read many of the previous answers, you should be aware that the tofflemire retainer has been replaced in the more up to date practices with the "Ring" matrix which creates a more natural contact for posterior teeth, the tofflemire was used to restore the distal of canine teeth, but as all the other respondents stated, a clear Mylar strip is used for front teeth and for all the reasons.

Use a different mat: toffelmyer bands are for filling posterior teeth. There are several other better suited matrices for anterior teeth
