Need exam: It is hard to tell if this is gum disease or tooth problem without an exam. Please see a dentist as soon as possible for exam, diagnosis and treatment.

Gum/tooth pain: May be mild infection or wisdom tooth impaction. Follow up with dentist this week, meanwhile try gargling 3x a day with salt water.

Exam and x-ray: Need to see a dentist and have a x-ray taken and an exam performed to help determine source of your issue. Could be a gum or tooth infection, or both.

Regardless, See DDS: If you have a toothache, you may have a cavity or advanced gum disease or both. Regardless the etiology, anyone with a toothache should see a dentist for diagnosis and treatment.
