Direct bilirubin: Gilbert's syndrome is a the most common hereditary cause of increased bilirubin. It is a genetic condition found in up to 5% of the population. Gilbert's syndrome rarely causes symptoms. However, in Gilbert's, it is the direct (unconjugated) bilirubin which is elevated.
