what are chances of having severe reaction with lidocaine to numb nose/throat for procedure? i had novocaine before, is novocaine and lidocaine same?

Unlikley: Novocaineand lidocaine are different members of the same family of anesthetics. There are reports of severe allergic reactions to these agents but they are very rare. In the hands of skilled physicians these agents are considered very safe.

I agree. If you tolerated one, you should tolerate others in that class. But if you have had a problem with one you may well have a problem with the others..
