They are both safe: These drugs can be used as sedation OR general anesthesia. It is determined by the amounts given and the patient's physiologic response. Both general anesthesia and conscious sedation are safe in the hands of a competent anesthesia provider who takes in account the patient's medical history, medications and physical condition.
