Meticulous hygiene: The simple answer is brush and floss; very thorough and very gentle. Salt water rinsing may also help. I also recommend my patients come in for a cleaning right after removing braces. With a 17 year old immune system you can see major changes in weeks with the right home care; talk with your dentist or hygienist for a more personalized answer :)

This is not uncommon: After your braces are removed. There can be some inflammation ( swelling, bleeding) of your gums due to the irritation of the braces and also due to difficulty of adequate brushing and flossing. Just make sure to brush well and floss each day and use warm salt water rinses for a few days ( 1 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water) Your gums should feel and look better in less a week.

See a dentist ASAP: Swollen and bleeding gums can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, gum disease. Untreated gingivitis can lead to the tooth loss and other health problems. See your dentist ASAP because the sooner you treat it the better the outcome.

Backlash: You are describing damage done by not cleaning properly while braces were in place, in particular not cleaning between your teeth. Start with your Dentist/Hygienist. Have a thorough professional cleaning. Review your Oral Hygiene techniques with them. If problem persists beyond a few weeks ask for referral to a Periodontist, a gum specialist.
