Herpes simplex: That is possible, although the likelihood is that they already had it from prior exposure. Many people who get this virus from contact with others do so without developing any symptoms. Most children get it between 3mos and 3yrs of age and by age 60 somewhere between 65 and 85% of people are infected. You do not need cold sores to be shedding the virus and infecting others.
