Normal variant : Spinal bifida occurs when during embryonic development the neural tube which forms the spinal cord and surrounding bones does not completely close. Spina bifida occulta is one of the more milder forms with really no significant complications. There are many stages and grades from mild to severe.

You will be okay: Occulta is Latin for "hidden".This is the mildest form of spina bifida. In occulta, the outer part of some of the vertebrae is not completely closed. The splits in the vertebrae are so small that the spinal cord does not protrude. The skin at the site i.e.S1 for you may be normal, or may have some hair growing from it; there may be a dimple or birthmark. It doesn't cause symptoms or back pain in most

Usually OK: Spina bifida occulta is when the vertebra behind the spinal cord aren't completely fused together. When the overlying skin is intact (especially in an adult), there are generally no problems. If you are having problems involving your bladder, sexual activity or sensation in your legs, see your physician.

Mild form: Occulta is the mildest form of Spina bifida. Patients usually have no signs, symptoms or neurological problems. Can be found on X-ray due to a small separation in one of the vertebrae. Sometimes a small tuft of hair or other skin discoloration can be seen over the defect.

Bone abnormality: Spina Bifida Occulta is a failure of the poster elements of a vertebra to completely fuse. It is usually an incidental finding on x-ray. If however you are having bladder or bowel problems, consult your doctor.
