Usually OK: Spina bifida occulta is when the vertebra behind the spinal cord aren't completely fused together. When the overlying skin is intact (especially in an adult), there are generally no problems. If you are having problems involving your bladder, sexual activity or sensation in your legs, see your physician.

Mild form: Occulta is the mildest form of Spina bifida. Patients usually have no signs, symptoms or neurological problems. Can be found on X-ray due to a small separation in one of the vertebrae. Sometimes a small tuft of hair or other skin discoloration can be seen over the defect.

Bone abnormality: Spina Bifida Occulta is a failure of the poster elements of a vertebra to completely fuse. It is usually an incidental finding on x-ray. If however you are having bladder or bowel problems, consult your doctor.
