Pharyngitis: Need to see a physician. Pharyngitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, warm saline gargles or viscous lidocaine, mouth swish and analgesics and oral rehydration. Care must be taken if infectious Mononucleiosis is suspected as reaction could occur penicillins.

Throat: Great question. Viral illnesses can go on for a few weeks but if you have it for a week I'd go see your doc and check it out. You may need a culture and possibly some blood tests
