It varies: Depend on the surgical treatment of your hyperaldo. If only 1 gland is removed, the other adrenal gland should be able to compensate hormonally. The most important hormone from the adrenal is cortisol (your stress hormone). Cortisol deficiency can be fatal. If both glands are removed, you will need to be on steroids for life. Dosed appropriately, you should not gain wtg from hydrocortisone.

Primary hyperaldo: Hi. Your doctors will do an interventional radiology procedure called adrenal venous sampling, where they measure aldosterone & cortisol from both adrenal veins and from the inferior vena cava. If that shows unilateral disease, the offending adrenal (an adenoma) is removed; if bilateral disease (hyperplasia), surgery is not done - medical therapy. You're normal if you lose 1 adrenal. Good luck!
