What causes sharp pain by left belly button it's short lived and happens every now and then?

Muscle pain: The most likely answer is some sort of muscular spasm causing the pain. There is also the possibility of a small umbilical hernia that could periodically cause some sharp pains. If the pain becomes severe and is associated with nausea, vomiting or fever, see a doctor right away.
