A member asked:

Is panniculectomy cheaper than tummy tuck?

18 doctors weighed in across 11 answers

Yes: A panniculectomy is typically deemed a medically necessary procedure by most insurances and therefore is paid for, whereas a tummy tuck is considered a cosmetic procedure. They are similar in that they both remove excess skin and fat along the waist line. However, a tummy tuck also addresses abdominal laxity and tightens the abdominal musculature.

Not always: These are general two different procedures performed for different indications. A panniculectomy is often performed for massive weight loss or obesity and essentially consists of skin removal withnthe attached fat. This can require several hours snfd require hospitalization which may dramatically increase the costs. A tummy tuck is generally cosmetic and these prepay rates are generally lower.

Panniculectomy cost: A tummy tuck is basically a panniculectomy (remove skin and fat) *plus* the muscle repair. Therefore, a panniculectomy takes less or time to perform. It generally takes ~3 hours for a panniculectomy, whereas a tummy tuck takes ~4 hours. Most surgical costs are a function of time, therefore the tummy tuck can cost 25-30% more. So yes, the panniculectomy is less expensive. Dr. Ricardo rodrigue.

Usually....: Usually a panniculectomy is covered by insurance and a tummy tuck is not. It then would depend upon how your insurer covers this and what hey assign to you cost-wise. A tummy tuck is larger scale operation with more dramatic results that few if any insurers in my area cover. http://www.cosmeticsurgerytruth.com/blog/?p=7017.

Not Necessarily.: Much will depend on exactly where the procedure is performed (hospital or outpatient surgery center) and whether or not insurance companies are involved ( possible with the panniculectomy surgery). Therefore, it is hard to generalize about the costs of the procedures.

Yes: A panniculectomy will only treat the skin below the umbilicus. It is about half the cost of a tummy tuck.

Removes only pannus: Pannus means loaf (of bread). When the skin folds over like a loaf of bread on the lower abdomen, a panniculectomy removes this excess skin and fat. It only addresses the lower abdominal roll, and does not include tightening the muscle.

Hi. The total cost of a panniculectomy depends on many factors, such as the techniques required to remove the pannus. It is often confused with a tummy tuck, which tightens the skin in the abdomen to create a slimmer appearance. Both procedures can be performed at the same time but only a panniculectomy is regularly covered by insurance, as a tummy tuck is considered an elective procedure.

It is cheaper: A panniculectomy is a simpler procedure that a tummy tuck so it is cheaper. A tummy tuck procedure is composed of muscle plication, reset of the belly button and panniculectomy. A complete tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure with more results than a panniculectomy. A panniculectomy is a half done tummy tuck.

Varies...: There are many “variables” involved. The specific surgeon's credentials/experience level (or lack thereof), the specific geographic area you are looking at, the different operations available, the location of the procedure (quality of surgery facility), type/quality of anesthesia provider… are some of the potential variables involved. See board certified plastic surgeons in consultation. Best.

If medically warranted, a panniculectomy may also be covered by insurance where a tummy tuck is never covered. http://www.cosmeticsurg.net/procedures/tummy-tuck/
