A little: Me arthrograms involve placing a small needle into the joint and injecting a contrast agent. Typically, all you feel is a small numbing shot. About 5-10 seconds of discomfort.

Yes: But not too much. I do thousands of arthrograms each year, and most of my patients say it is not much worse than a flu shot or venous blood draw when done by an experienced physician. Avoid residents and facilities that do a low number of these studies each year. For more information about arthrograms, google "DrNefcy.com".

Possibly: The injection prior to the MRI can be painful. The MRI is not painful, but sometimes with painful conditions it can be difficult to lie still. You can also have claustrophobia while having your MRI scan.
