How do a regular hip mri and an arthrogram of the hip differ?

See answer: An MRI arthrogram involves a needle injection of gadolinium contrast into the hip joint - this will enable the radiologist to better delineate internal structures of the hip particularly the cartilaginous labra - it is most commonly utilized to more accurately define a labral tear.

More complex study.: I assume you mean an MRI of the hip compared to an MRI of the hip with an arthrogram. Both studies include an MRI of the hip. The study with an arthrogram helps to better visualize the labral and articular cartilage about the hip. Along with an arthrogram, additional medication is placed into the hip joint, which can help determine if your hip pain is inside the joint and capsule or outside.
