Can ampicillin clear up strep throat?

Yes: But Ampicillin might not be the best choice for a variety of reasons. Penicillin alone, taken orally is probably the drug of choice. Ampicillin is absorbed in the end of the small bowel and large amounts get into the large bowel and change the bacteria there and create possible diarrhea (some due to clostrid. Difficile). A similar drug (amoxicillin) is less likely to cause these problems.

Yes: Better than 99% cure rate for strep with ampicillin. Not used as much because it needs to be given more frequently than amoxicillin. But is still a good choice!

Yes: Yes if taken for 10 days. Amoxicillin is much better absorbed than Ampicillin and can be taken with food. Amoxicillin is preferred.
