Depending on your: Body type and whether you want to lose weight, maintain or gain. Anything less than 1, 200 cals has never been proven to be healthy or wise.

Yes: You are essentially starving yourself. Your body will not function properly if don't eat enough. The safest way to loose weight if that is what you are trying to do is to reduce your calorie intake by about 500 calories a day by eating smaller healthier low calorie foods like fresh vegetables, baked vs fried foods etc. Also starting an exercise program to help burn calories.

A 29-year-old member asked:
Is it dangerous or not to eat under 1000 calories per day>?

It is dangerous: No one should eat less than 1200 cal per day without medical supervision. Starving yourself makes you lose muscle and decrease your metabolic rate so in the end people often don't lose or rebournd.. Eat 1200 cal of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean protein daily. Each pound of weight is worth approx 3500 calories, so if you burn off 2200 cal and eat 1200/day, you will lose 2 lb/week.

Varies: It varies but for a healthy adult a ball park figure would be about 600 calories for three meals per day.
