It is sent to ...: Pathology. The specimen is preserved in formalin and then processed so that the pathologist can look at thin slices of it under the microscope for diagnostic purposes. Most of the time, when the appendix it removed, it is for infection (appendicitis), and the pathologist describes the inflammation. Rarely, other diagnoses are seen, such as cancer. Sometimes, the appendix is normal.
