What can cause shooting pains from the mid, left back (about two inches from the spine) to the inside of one's knee?

Spine specialist: Difficult to say with that description. Check out the dermatome charts to see if any follows your pattern. The L3 and L4 can go to the inside of the knee, but other things (joints, muscles) can be painful and be felt far from the source (referred pain). This is why i'd suggest you see a local spine specialist (physiatrist, anesthesia pain, etc) to find out exactly what's causing the pain.
