Get blood level: The good news is that you don't have to guess. You can measure your Vitamin D level and then go from there. While most adults can safely tolerate 1000-2000 IU/day or more, toxicity is possible in the long run. So, it is best to find out what your starting point is. Also, if you are in the sun a lot you may not need as much in supplement form. However, sun alone may not be enough in many people.

30-100 ng/ml is best: You can get your vitamin d above 30 by taking 1000-2000 units per day. Higher levels are of no benefit and levels above 100 can be harmful.
