Yes, they are: Orthodontists are dentists who have advanced education in the specialty of orthodontics, and they usually limit their practice to orthodontics. They can spot cavities... If they are looking for them. Your general dentist and hygienist are usually the ones looking out for carious lesions.

Cavities: Orthodontists can diagnose cavities that are on the chewing surface as well as those between the teeth using the same x-rays and diagnostic images that your dentist uses. Orthodontists went to dental school prior to receiving their specialty training, so they completed a 3 or 4 year dds training. If your orthodontist mentioned that you have one, contact your dds to have it treated asap.

Yes: To become an Orthodontic Specialist you must first train as a Dentist and then take a specialty residency. While Orthodontists are trained to "spot" cavities, that's not what they do. They correct malocclusion. They do not do an examination for cavities at every visit. That's why it's important that you see your General Dentist for regular care during your time in Orthodontic treatment.

Yes: But you should not rely on your Orthodontist to detect cavities. It is your responsibility to also see your General Dentist during Orthodontic treatment for routine clinical evaluations, x-rays cleanings: and to adhere to proper oral hygiene. It is not your Orthodontist's responsibility to check for cavities.
