A member asked:

Are red eyes caused by eye strain or dry eyes?

7 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Possibly: Red eyes is just a sign of irritation. It is very non-specific and can be caused by numerous etiologies including eye strain. Eye strain leads to dry eyes, which could then cause red eyes. You should see an eye md for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Red eyes: Can be caused by either eye strain or dry eyes. Typically if the redness is due to eye strain, it will get better when you rest your eyes. Dry eyes will often cause other symptoms like dryness (of course!), irritation, foreign body sensation, and sometimes vision changes. You can try treating your eyes with artificial tears. This often helps, but if not, then see your eye doctor.
