Questions..questions: They may begin with many questions: have frequent headaches?, trouble opening jar?, been diagnosed with migraines?, recent trauma or accidents?, recent dental work/orthodontics before TMJ symptoms?..Etc then he/she will plan a treatment (hopefully as easy a a special 'night guard' when sleeping).

An evaluation: I measure maximum opening, right and left lateral movement. Listen/feel the tmj. Discuss possible life style changes based on how much the TMJ bothers. Discuss need for an occlusal appliance. X-rays?

Explanation: The most important part of a tmj/tmd evaluation is an explanation of what tmj/tmd is and a thorough history discussion with the dentist/tmj specialist. In my office, we have free consultations where a thorough history is discussed. This helps determine a potential treatment plan. You may not receive treatment or therapy at your first visit...Educating you is imperative.

A few ideas.: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
