Tmj: the doctor should do a complete had and neck exam,measure range of motion of the jaw and neck. check joint function, maybe take a special xray or 3-d image of the joints. if you have not been to the general dentist recently, they should also check your teeth and the way they come together. airway check( jaw joint pain can be due to breathing problems). you will fill out health questionaire

Varies: Each TMJ/TMD specialist has varying treatment procedures for dealing with a TMJ/TMD issue. I always have free consultations first, and at that appointment, we get a thorough history and discuss potential treatment at that visit.

A few things: Make sure he/she is an expert. Expect a long questionnaire. A comprehensive exam and a-rays. A well thought out treatment plan. You may want a second opinion.
