Go look in mirror: Check inside eyelids to be sure no foreign matter in there (lash, contact, dirt, etc.) and try to gently remove if found. If nothing there, can apply cool washcloth over closed eyelid for a few minutes to see if it helps. Can also try dose of otc pain med (tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil, etc.). If still problem, needs seen--you only get one set.

Teary red eye: With pain is an emergency if caused by trauma. It could possibly be from a scratch, foreign object , severe allergic conjunctivitis, cosmetics, contacts, viral or bacterial causes.Try cool compresses, sliced cucumbers, bag of frozen veges, refrigerated chamomile tea bags.Apply over affected eye for 15 minutes.If you have eye pain, blurred/ double vision, sensitive to light, seek immediate medical attention.
