Hypertension defined: Everyone's blood pressure rises and falls during the day in response to activities. During exercise, it is normal for the blood pressure to rise. A resting blood pressure should be below 135/85 mmhg. If resting blood pressures are always above this cut off, that defines hypertension and it should be treated to avoid long-term consequences of elevated blood pressure.

120/80.: Regardless of age, the blood pressure should be no higher than 120/80 to be normal. We used to think that higher systolic numbers were acceptable for older people, but we don't think that anymore.
