Periodontal Disease: Receding gums can be the outward sign of a more serious condition called periodontal disease. It can also be caused by clenching and grinding your teeth. Either way, if you are concerned about saving your teeth, see a dentist or periodontist soon.

Vigerous brushing: In addition to dr iacobelli's excellent answer we sometimes see gum recession in patients who brush too vigorously and damage their gums. Gum recession is also seen in patients whose teeth are expanded off of their bone support. In either case, see your dentist or a periodontist, a gum specialist.
