A member asked:

Debilitating migraines, 6 weeks pregnant, taking fioricet (acetaminophen butalbital and caffeine) daily. fioricet (acetaminophen butalbital and caffeine) or hydrocodone during pregnancy, which has less effect on embryo and fetus?

Not advise either: Some obstetricians feel that hydrocodone is relatively safe during pregnancy, but in my opinion, best to avoid if possible. Would not recommend use of Fioricet (acetaminophen butalbital and caffeine) in most patients with migraine, especially pregnancy, as it is in the barbiturate family, and has habituation risk. Have found that breathing 100% oxygen as needed is useful and safe. As pregnancy proceeds your headaches should lessen.

Category C Meds: Both medications that you have cited have been designated category c medications in terms of pregnancy. " animal studies show adverse fetal effect(s) but no controlled human studies or no animal or human studies; weigh possible fetal risk vs. Maternal benefit; see pkg insert for drug-specific recs." it is best to consult with your ob/gyn or a neonatologist for more specific information.

Neithet: I do not recommend either to be used during pregnancy as both are scheduled classified.
