A member asked:

Which is a more accurate way to detect colitis: ct or colonoscopy? ct showed colitis, colonoscopy didn't. symptoms present for over a year so not viral...?

Colonoscopy: Is more sensitive. Colitis can be suspected on ct with colon wall thickening and strandy inflammation extending into the surrounding tissues. However, as colonoscopy can see the affected tissue directly (and permit biopsy when needed) it is the best test.

Colonoscopy: Colonoscopy is direct visualization of colon mucosa, only in cases of microscopic colitis ( collagenous or lymphocytic ) the colonoscopy is normal. If biopsies were taken will show colitis. In these cases ct is also normal.
