OK if wt loss goal: There is no substitution for a healthy, well-balanced diet, regardless if the goal is weight gain or loss. Weight gain is achieved if the individual takes in more calories than he/she burns; weight loss happens when calories burned exceed calorie intake. 800 calories/day long term is not recommended and you may need to supplement to be sure diet is complete.

Starvation Diet: Starvation diets are often the worst when it comes to lasting weight loss. Turning off the metabolism in your body by starving does lead to temporary early satiation, but in the long run, when one returns to more normal or common calorie levels the weight gain is rapid and often more than was lost. The best diets include grazing (eating six small meals daily) and having proteins as the main foods.
