Dr. Theodore Davantzis answered

Specializes in Dentistry

Two specialists: Oral surgeons deal with corrective jaw surgery, orthodontists deal with orthodontia. Usually they work together as a team if surgery of the jaw is indicated.

Orthognathic surgery: An orthodontist along with an oral surgeon who performs orthognathic surgery will diagnose, plan and treat you together as a team. Here is a good source for some more information: http://www.Aaoms.Org/conditions-and-treatments/corrective-jaw-surgery/.

Collaborative: Usually Orthodontic Specialist optimally aligns upper teeth to upper jaw, lower teeth to lower jaw. Oral Surgeon then coordinates jaws to each other and to other cranio-facial structures. After surgery additional time in braces required to synchronize occlusion.
