Cancer?: Unlikely but you must see the surgeon as soon as possible. That does not mean you must have surgery. Listen to the surgeon! Hope all goes well - please keep me informed.

What could it be?: You're asking for a diagnosis without benefit of examination and x-rays. Can't do that. Can, however, tell you that if your Dentist thought the area in question required immediate attention, it's important that you be see by the Oral Surgeon that he referred you to as expeditiously as possible. After examination and records review the Oral Surgeon can give you a knowledgeable answer.

Dear concerned: It's more likely something other than cancer, and any number of things that would also benefit from early treatment. If I were in your shoes I would ask the dentist what are the more likely possibilities and what would treatment and prognosis be for each. Also ask the surgeon prior to treatment. You deserve to know the answers before you commit to anything.
