ADHD or GAD: I have seen plenty of people with both add or adhd and gad. They often have bipolar disorder or major depression in the mix. While the psychostimulant relieves part of the anxiety, xanax can relieve the other half of the anxiety. Since the anxiety productivity curve is a bell shaped curve, the less anxiety someone has to a certain point is going to improve their performance. My guess is that you may have both and that therefore utilizing either medication moves you further up along the productivity curve when it comes to anxiety. If however you were toget too much sedation you would start dropping off on the other end of the curve. This would impair your productivity. After tapering gradually off your alprazolam, a trial on Buspar (buspirone) would seem to be warranted.

Consultation: There are many medications which are much more appropriate for adhd than xanax (alprazolam). Xanax (alprazolam) does not work "similar to adhd meds" at all. You have shared elsewhere that you're taking 90 mg/day of dexedrine, a very high dose which exposes you to side effects without benefit. Please consult a psychiatrist who is skilled in treating adhd, anxiety disorders, and xanax (alprazolam) dependence.
