Uncomfortable: Your dr will describe the feelings and the ways you can reduce the discomfort. Remember, teeth don't want to move so they send messages to your brain through the nerves. Like -there's a wolf chewing on my face- but you know it's the braces.

2-3 days discomfort: You will feel soreness (like if you had worked out too hard) in your mouth for 2-3 days. Nothing advil (ibuprofen) can not most address. No one misses work or school for this. You'll likely want to eat softer foods these first few days. After that, treatment is relatively pain free with only the similar soreness after some adjustments and for much shorter periods (hours, not days).

Expect Sore Teeth: It is very normal that for the 1st 2-4 days after initial placement of braces, the teeth can be sore. The initial wire that puts force on the teeth is the cause. I recommend patients taking a normal dose of their typical over the counter pain reliever (aceptometaphin or ibuprofen) at least one hour prior to the appointment and continue regular use for the 1st day to help offset the discomfort.

Little sore, common: OTC pain relievers like NSAIDs and Tylenol (acetaminophen) can help, just be sure to never exceed the dosage listed on the bottle.
