Insect bite?: Although the question is a bit vague, it sounds like an insect bite. Assuming you have an identifying mark on your finger it would not be unusual to see inflammation extension above the finger. However, many other possibilities exist, trauma being one of them, arthritic inflammation being one as well.

Infection can be: Present when swelling and pain spreads along hte finger from the hand or the finger to the hand. Seek medical care as infections can get serious fast. Especialy if it just started rapidly and is associate with pain and redness and you dont have a history of gout or other joint issues.
