Days to weeks: Many variables are taken into consideration; type of fracture, mechanism of injury and treatment (closed manipulation vs surgery). Generally, you can expect to have swelling for a few weeks. Elevation, ice, and early finger mobilization are key to reducing swelling. Fracture stability should be assessed by an orthopaedist in order to make recommendations for safe mobilization.

Long Time: Swelling can persist for months after fractures of the wrist. As the acute injury heals, the swelling should decrease but the hand/wrist may always be slightly more swollen than the unaffected side. Certainly you need to make sure that the fracture has healed appropriately by seeing an orthopaedic surgeon and if it has, you may benefit from seeing an occupational/hand therapists.
