Fungal meningitis: There are several fungi that not infrequently cause meningitis. Among these are cryptococcus, coccidiodes, and rarely histoplasma and blastomyces. Without knowing whether you are referring to these or to the patients who received injections of contaminated steroids into their spinal column cannot answer your question very clearly. Meningitis has nothing to do with your throat directly.

Altered mental statu: Individuals with fungal meningitis will present with altered mental status, confusion, headache and possibly fever. Fungal meningitis occurs mostly in people with compromised immune systems. There are areas of the country where virulent strains of fungi are encountered. Recently, tainted steroid injections were the source of fungal meningitis.
