A member asked:

What are the negatives if long-term (approx. 15 years) of ppi use? stopped last month and the gastro is insisting i start use again. b/c of history

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Some potential issue: There are some theoretical concerns about bone loss, infections and benign stomach polyp growth with long-term use of ppi's. However, this must be balanced with risks/benefits of not being on them i.e. Complications of long-standing reflux i.e. Esophageal cancer, strictures, etc. Best to use the drug at the most effective dose and for the recommended duration of the disease process.
