PH monitoring probe: Gastro doctors can insert a device called a Bravo probe that measures stomach acid for 24+ hrs. (In the old days, a pH monitoring probe threaded through the nose did the same thing). An endoscopy only confirms the effects of excess stomach acid but doesn't measure acidity directly. Alkaline stomachs can cause heartburn. PPIs are newer meds, so long-term safety is unknown but appear to be safe 4now
