Not a last choice: It is a choice. There are many meds that are mood stabilizers for bipolar affective disorder.Any of the anti-seizure drugs have proven useful with bpad.

No: It can be used first choice or last choice. Especially helpful in rapid cycling and mixed mood states. I don't know if you are still on Luvox (fluvox (fluvoxamine)amine) or not, but there are drug interactions with tegretol and luvox (fluvoxamine). Combo can lower sodium levels, raise tegretol levels, cause serotonin syndrome or cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Alone, the most common side effect I have seen leading to discontinuation is anallergy to it.
