Trombiculidae: Itching can be helped with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines as well as hot showers or baths. In cases of severe dermatitis or secondary infection with chigger bites, a doctor should be consulted. Some apply petroleum jelly or painting nail polish over the chigger bite under the false belief that the nail polish will suffocate the chiggers under the skin, but it does not work that way.
