Depends: Follow directions given tom you by your dentist. Take antibiotics if given. Keep the area clean and eat a healthy diet. Your body should take care of the rest.

Should not happen. : If the abscess was caused by an infected tooth it should resolve once the offending tooth is removed.

Proper home care: With proper home care an abscess occurring after an extraction is very rare. Brush the rest of your teeth normally, after the first 6-8 hours start rinsing your mouth with warm salt water after meals for the next 3-4 days, if prescribed take an antibiotic as per your doctors instructions. Primary healing should happen within 3-4 days and finish up over the next 10-14 days.
