No: If the abscess does not require root canal therapy or extraction of the affected tooth, then most likely periodontal surgery would be involved. In addition, an abscess on a previously treated root canal would probably require an apicoectomy.

No,: No. Some gum abscesses might be periodontal in nature and you might just need to have a deep cleaning with local anesthesia to clear up the infection.
