Extra gums?: Lots of possibilities including poor plaque control which would lead to swollen gums. Your orthodontist would be the best one to ask what's going on and why as well as how to prevent any problems during orthodontic treatment.

Space issue: Think of it this way... When you had spaces between your teeth, there was a certain amount of gum tissue between each tooth. As the spaces closed, the tissue became "squished" between the teeth, so it appears that there is "extra" tissue there. Over time, everything should recontour itself and you should look and feel fine. Discuss your concerns with your orthodontist, too.

Normal response: this is a normal response when closing gaps with orthodontic treatment and will usually resolve with time and good hygiene. Follow your dentist's instructions and talk with him about your questions and he will give you advice to help with this issue.
