A member asked:

After i removed my braces, i noticed that my bracketed teeth have become extremely sensitive. i am thinking either the enamel wore down in those teeth or my gums receded and the roots have become exposed. can eitherof those problems be corrected fully?

Depends on severity: If the crowns of the teeth are sensitive and the enamel is intact, you may be able to correct this using a product such as sensodyne. If the enamel is severely damaged, restorative dental treatment may be your best option. If root surface exposure, this again depends on the severity. Gum tissue grafts would be a worst case scenario. Some sensitivity can be considered normal though.

Make sure: It.Would be best to discuss your concerns with the doctor that treated you . The sensitivity may be controlled by your dentist. Root resorption can be evaluated radiograhicly (x-rays), and gingival recession, if severe enough, may require treatment from a periodontist.

Braces: These are possibilities. You could try sensodyne for 2 weeks and see if it starts to feel better. However, another possibility is that the teeth are still a little loose from the braces and therefore are sensitive. The best thing to do is go and talk with your doc who can evaluate the situation by examination.

May not be it: Make an appointment to visit your orthodontist to discuss any sensitivity you are experiencing. It is not uncommon to be aware of more sensitivity immediately after the removal of braces. Enamel loss is unlikely but recession of gum tissue may have occurred but the process is typically slow and the sensitivity would have occurred during braces. If there is recession, see a periodontist.

Sensitivity: If you have not had your teeth cleaned regularly during your braces, now is the time to see your general dentist. Sensodyn toothpaste may help. Your dentist can help desensitize your teeth.
