Not normal.: It is not normal for a 16 Y.O. To have varicose veins and, in fact, it is not normal for anyone to have varicose veins. Varicose veins are due to leaking (refluxing) valves of the saphenous system. The gold standard for treatment is to close the leaking valves. You should have a venous reflux ultrasound and see a vein specialist. Your age is not a contraindication to treatment.

Yes : Even though it’s quite rare to see varicose veins in teens, it is possible for younger individuals to develop varicose veins that are tender or even painful. Vein factors in younger individuals that develop varicose veins indicate that there is a very good chance that family genetics have played a role. The good news is that treatment options are still extremely effective!

Maybe: If both your parents have bad varicose veins, then this is to be expected. Exercise, compression stockings and maintaining a normal weight are first line treatments. If you have a birthmark and/or swelling near the veins, you may have klippel-trenaunay syndrome. You should consider seeing a vein specialist or phlebologist.
