Compression hose: Wearing compression hose or stockings may help, but if you are genetically predisposed to varicose veins, they may only delay the onset. You should get properly fit for compression stockings, and wear the proper length based on your symptoms. If you are having swelling or pain in the legs from venous reflux, you should get it checked out.

Varicose veins: There are said to be at least 8 theories as to why varicose veins develop, but probably no real way to prevent them from developing. Clearly, some genetic component so helps to pick good parents.

Change your heredity: I completely agree with dr. Clark. Apart from changing who your grandparents were, there is little you can do to preventing getting varicose veins. If it is in your genes, it will happen. Wearing compression stockings may help make things less severe but they won't stop you from getting varicose veins all together, as dr. Lin said.

Varicose veins: Usually varicose vein disease is genetically acquired. Weak vein valves progressively break as a result of venous insufficiency. Leg ultrasound often reveals venous reflux disease in veins called saphenous veins, which causes the development of the surface veins. They cannot be prevented. But how quickly they worsen or progress can be minimized by compression stockings & keeping a normal weight.
